Here are a few books I’ve read and recommend to anyone that is actually interested in Atheism, Skepticism, Rationalism, Science and Evolution. I’m sure if you’re even reading this site you’d have to be somewhat interested as I don’t expect to receive a huge religious following on this site. Keep checking back, this list will grow as time permits me to add more books and or read more that are related to this site.
Why Darwin Matters: The Case Against Intelligent Design
by Michael Shermer
This book by Michael Shermer is the case against intelligent design, how it’s probably very unlikely that the universe and world we know of was not created by a designer.
This books presents the facts about evolution and debunks the idea that intelligent design is not of scientific theory. Simply put, evolution is real and isn’t going away anytime soon. The idea that public schools are getting pushed by creationists and intelligent designers doesn’t make the case against evolution. They lack one thing, the facts and scientific theory.
Shermer details the facts of evolution in a way that anyone of any age can understand. If you are already on the evolution side or an atheist, this book gives more insight to the facts that evolution does exist and is real. If you are religious, this is still a good read to maybe sway you with more details that our universe and life as we know it probably wasn’t created by some divine designer.
The God Delusion
by Richard Dawkins
If you’re not an atheist already, this book is intended for you to become one. I’ve read that some religious people are scared to read this book because it really does challenge their beliefs in a deity.
Richard Dawkins comes with what some might think as witty or even harsh in a way with his attacks on religion or God in this book. Dawkins brings forth the highly improbably reasoning there is no supreme being floating in the sky above us, watching us, our every move and thought.
This book brings some new insights and defends evolution at it’s best. It is an attack on religion and the faulty logic behind it all. Read it at your own risk if you are religious, you might just come out as an atheist after reading the God Delusion or maybe at least leaning towards agnosticism. Be prepared to think about what you believe in with an open mind but not forgetting that you can in fact lead a happy, normal life without worshiping some evil, jealous, arrogant deity.
Godless: How an Evangelical Preacher Became One of America’s Leading Atheists
by Dan Barker
As a preacher for 20 years, converting anyone from Catholics to Atheists, speaking in tongues and writing Christian music, Dan Barker describes his times as a young man through his walk of becoming a Christian Evangelical to an Atheist, on his own account through the realization of the illogicality the bible teaches us.
Barker came to become a free thinker all on his own. His search for knowledge outside of Christianity books and reading enlightened him to lead a life of rationalism, free thought and best of all, freedom from religion.
This is a great book to read as a believer or not. What’s inside of the mind of a preacher that starts to think for himself over time of the things he actually preaches. Although Barker lost many close friends, his wife over his new lifestyle without religion, he is now married to another leader in free thought and helps run the Freedom From Religion Foundation, a organization to keep Church out of the State.
The book also includes some great information on the contradictions and discrepancies the bible offers. It is a great read for anyone that is fascinated with religion, either to debunk it or embrace it to read about one mans quest for the actual truth.
